Entertainment Review of May 08

Here’s our run down of the entertainment antics of May. Music Film and entertainment has all been out to play this month. If you’ve not noticed – where have you been?

Britains Got Talent
Three Judges sat at a bench facing a stage has become a given ingredient on our talent shows – but Britain’s got talent goes for the extra harsh move of huge X’s that light up and blare out a resounding beep for all to hear and take note of the disapproval coming from the bench. Harsh but to be fair – often deserving! Someone should have told them they were better leaving their party tricks at home. The variety has been entertaining – someone clearly hadn’t thought through the dancing ferrets! Who qualified these judges though. This is a nationwide competition…so surely we could have found some judges who were involved in creative arts? Fair enough Simon Cowell – but is he the only music talent spotter in the UK? Piers was a press guy who kows a lot about famous people in the press but we are looking for talent spotting not different methods of hitting the tabloids. And Amanda – I’m guessing she was brought on as the emotional woman who would show heartfelt emotion – but seriously an actress wasn’t the answer!

Indy Flying High
The 18 year gap didn’t mar the success of the forth Indiana Jones film, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, released in the UK in May. The film soared way past its budget in box office sales and topped the ratings in its first week of release in America. The film sees legend, Harrison Ford, share the spotlight with both established actors as well as rising stars such as Shia LaBeouf (Transformers). And believe it or not Ford still managed to fit into his costume from 1989’s The Last Crusade, he’s obviously been keeping up the busy lifestyle akin to being Indy!

Wogans Eurovision Doubts
After this years Eurovision contest, Terry Wogan leaves doubts over whether he will continue to present the annual event. As well as television ratings being down from last year, so it appears is our reputation with other European countries. Our entry, Andy Abraham, gave a decent performance, and in the opinion of Wogan “deserved far more points than it got”, a mere 14 in total. Russia stole the show and the points, winning clear with 272. They got the maximum 12 points from 7 countries and to say that’s not politics is a definite misjudgement. Let’s face it we’ve never been favourites at Eurovision, it puzzles us to understand why people still want to put themselves through the torture at a shot of making it big (which has hardly ever happened). There needs to be some kind of fair scoring rules applied or maybe it won’t just be Wogan pulling out for next year, it may just be the whole of the UK.

Ting Tings at the Top
The release of their debut album, We Started Nothing, saw chart topping success and knocked Neil Diamond of the number one spot. It’s the third time lucky for the bands singer, Katie White, who also tried pop stardom in the short-lived girl group TKO. Their brand of ‘jagged pop’ also saw singles success with That’s Not My Name which went to number one at the end of May only to be replaced the next week by Rihanna’s Take A Bow. Should they stay or should they go? Will we see this fad turn legend? If we had to predict, we’d say yes, we reckon it won’t be long before other groups follow in their jagged pop footsteps. But for now we’ll have to wait and see!
